On the Go: 40 Years Running!

40th Annual Charlottesville Ten Miler

By: Ashley Mauldin

On March 21st, thousands of runners and hundreds of spectators will participate in the 40th edition of Charlottesville’s oldest foot race, the Charlottesville Ten Miler. The course will take runners on an adventure through the grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s beautiful University of Virginia, the Downtown Mall, and the surrounding county. The beloved race brings the community together to appreciate each other, our town, its roots, and much more.

But with the temperatures continuing to drop—and the recent snowfall— how are you to stay motivated to get out there and run? Here are a few tips to keep yourself on track:

  • Find a workout buddy – Having someone to exercise with can help you stay on track. You feel more responsible to work out and accomplish your goals if you know that your actions directly impact someone else’s life. And who doesn’t love hanging out with their friends?
  • Buy some new gear – It’s always important to dress warmly when you’re doing anything in cold temperatures, but treat yourself to a new, fun piece of clothing. The excitement of a new garment might make it easier to get out and run because you’ll be excited to wear it. We’re digging the new UV protective gear from BloqUV.

  • Set reminders for yourself – It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day activities and make exercising a low priority, so take some time to establish a reminder that works for you. Whether it’s laying out your running gear the night before, or a cell phone alert, find something will point out that you need to run—without making you feel guilty or annoyed.
  • Don’t be afraid to run inside – Just because it will most likely be cold during the Charlottesville Ten Miler doesn’t mean you always have to run outside to prepare for the race. Give yourself a break sometimes and run on an indoor track or treadmill. You need to change up your exercises so you don’t get bored.

These are just a few tips to help you stay motivated during the winter months, but they may not work for everyone. Do you have any other winter running or exercising tips to share? A handful of us Nesters are running the race and would love some extra motivation!

More details about the Charlottesville Ten Miler can be found here. We hope to see you there!
