Holidays at the Beach

By Liz Bianchini

Any time that you get to spend in Wilmington and the surrounding beaches is always a good time. The Holidays are even more special. With the area decorated and good cheer all around, you may find yourself wanting to stay for good and not just for the Holidays.

When you visit the beach this time of year the winter sun glistens off the water in just a way that pulls you in. The beach goers are few and far between, and sometimes you feel like you may be the only one standing on the sand. You may need a winter coat one day and the next could be a day in shorts and flip-flops.

While you’re visiting, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained.

Friday the 27th of November, visit Historic Wilmington for the Downtown Tree Lighting Ceremony and the official start to the Holidays! The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. on Water Street and Princess Street, with live music and holiday cheer. Santa arrives at 6:25 p.m.!

The North Carolina Holiday Flotilla is a long-standing tradition on Wrightsville Beach. This year we will celebrate the 32nd Annual Flotilla. Every year on the weekend after Thanksgiving, the festivities begin. There is a launch party on Friday night, and on Saturday there is a festival in the park in Wrightsville Beach. Start your Christmas shopping early with arts, crafts, and great food. There are fun things for small children as well. Then Saturday night at 6:00 p.m., walk over to Banks Channel Bridge to watch the decorated boats float down the water in parade style. It is a lot of fun and exciting to watch the creativeness of the decorated boats! Check out the website for more information.

While you are here visiting, or even if you are a local, be sure to visit Airlie Gardens for Enchanted Airlie, the enchanted garden tour. From Thanksgiving to Christmas, the gardens are beautifully decorated with sparkling lights and festive sounds. They are a must-see for the holidays! Visit the website for ticket information.
