A historic elementary school becomes a grand estate.
In 1922, the first class began at the Batesville Elementary School in historic Batesville, VA. Now, nearly a century later, the former school has been transformed into a grand family home.
École, French for “school,” sits atop a lovely hill with manicured gardens, pool, and original barn. Inside, the 4,400-square-foot home has been lovingly renovated and reconfigured, while preserving the grace of the early 1900s. Original hardwood floors, large windows, and architectural details help the home retain its original Classic Revival charm. Homeowner Nina Alkhateeb gave us a glimpse into the spectacular estate.
The subtle color palette gives the home an airy, ethereal quality. Classic architectural details remain, preserving its heritage, and serving as a remembrance of the past. Sunlight streams through the large windows, and the floor plan effortlessly flows from one space to the next.
A photo of the house, as it appeared when it was the Batesville Elementary School, is displayed above an original school desk and chair.
At the home’s entrance, original hardwood floors, high ceilings and an elegant chandelier set the tone.
Delicate vignettes are scattered throughout. Fine artwork lines the hallway that leads to bedrooms, which were formerly used as classrooms.
In the dining room a boldly colored painting dominates the room. A modern light fixture atop the large farmhouse table feels sophisticated, not stuffy.
In the living room traditional architectural details are juxtaposed with modern furnishings. Low-profile lounges in a velvety amethyst play off the white and lavender wainscoting on the walls.
The second floor has been completely renovated with a sitting area, two bedrooms, and a full bathroom with a modern glass shower enclosure.
