Meet the Agent: Dawn Cromer

We think we have some pretty awesome agents here at Nest, and we think you’ll like them too. During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them—what makes them tick and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. For this installment we speak with Dawn Cromer, a Realtor® at Nest Realty Charlottesville.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to Charlottesville?
Dawn Cromer: I attended UVA for undergraduate and graduate school while competing on a track and field and cross country scholarship. I couldn’t stop running after I graduated so I went professional and also was the assistant coach at UVA. This kept me in Charlottesville for an additional five years after college and it was during this time that I really learned what a great town Charlottesville was outside of the college bubble.

NR: How did you get into real estate?
DC: While I was a professional runner I needed a part-time job that didn’t entail any rigorous physical labor. I accepted a position at a local real estate firm to work for several Real Estate Agents. I did this for 2.5 years before deciding to get my license and dive into the industry after I hung up my shoes with professional running. It was great exposure to the nature of this sleepless beast of a business without fully being immersed in it. I watched the bubble of 2006 hit and I watched it all crash while standing on the sidelines. I can’t say my timing was perfect as I decided to get my license and dive head first into real estate in 2008 as it crashed, however I took what I learned working at the real estate firm for almost 3 years and applied it quickly to gain good momentum quickly in a downward spiral market.

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
DC: Being a professional runner is a very self-motivating, goal oriented, and disciplined career. While being a professional runner and a Realtor are two completely different occupations, many of the attributes I worked hard at as a runner transferred to my job as a Realtor.

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
DC: What’s not to love at Nest?! Nest was “different” in a good way. They were innovative and stood out as a company that was very client focussed. I loved that they had an in-house marketing division that supplied its agents and buyers/sellers with tools that keep advancing their experience when it comes to real estate. I also feel like I’m surrounded by the cream of the crop for Realtors in this town and having all of the brightest brains to run ideas and transaction issues by, makes it feel like a team where everyone is helping each other out.

NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
DC: The clients I get to meet, the stories I get to hear, and the smiles across faces that I get to see. It’s a very rewarding career!

NR: Who would be your dream client?
DC: My parents. I would LOVE to help them either build or find their retirement home! I know they would completely trust me to take the reigns for them.

NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
DC: BUDGET! Saving up for a down payment is one thing but all of the other miscellaneous expenses add up quickly from closing costs which average 2%-3% of your loan amount, moving expenses, storage expenses if you can’t make the move once, temporary rental costs, window treatment expense so the neighbors can’t see straight in to your house when you move in and just in general home ownership expenses that could happen at just about any moment from a water heater breaking to the HVAC not working.

NR: What is your favorite season in C’ville?
DC: Autumn! Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by bright foliage, mountain views, vineyards, a cool air slightly warmed by the sun and the smell of your neighbors fireplace burning down the street?
