Situated along the northern edge of the City of Charlottesville, the Rio district offers residents with housing options in close proximity to both Downtown Charlottesville and major shopping in Northern Albemarle. The Rio Road corridor extends from Park Street (Downtown) to Route 29 in Northern Albemarle to the Ivy Creek Natural Area. The Rio district has been and continues to be a hotbed for residential and commercial growth. Because of this, there is a nice variety of established neighborhoods, relatively new neighborhoods (5-10 years old) and brand new communities. In addition to major shopping, Rio residents have nearby schools and popular natural areas like the Rivanna Trail, Greenleaf Park, and Ivy Creek. Though just about all homes and neighborhoods are less than 5 miles from the Downtown Mall, Fashion Square Mall, and Hollymead Town Center, traffic can sometimes become an issue during rush hour. That being said, the Rio district continues to be a popular choice if you are looking for a suburban feel that is centrally located to many popular Charlottesville and Albemarle County hot spots.
