UVa Spring Sports in Full Swing

Spring in Charlottesville is upon us and that means UVa spring athletics are in full swing.  If you only think of basketball and football as the big Cavalier sporting events, you’re missing out.  Here’s a rundown on some of the nation’s top teams…right here in Charlottesville

Cavalier Baseball

After 2009’s first run to the College World Series, the Wahoos came up 1 win short in 2010 of a repeat visit to Omaha.  But after losing a solid core of their players in the pro baseball draft, the Hoos entered 2011 with tempered expectations.  But, the team is off to a hot start with a 29-2 record and have risen to the #1 ranking in the country.  The Hoos travel to Atlanta this weekend, but are home the weekend of April 15-17 against Duke and then again the 22nd – 24th against NC State.  If you haven’t been to a weekend ACC baseball series at Davenport, then you need to check it out.  But plan ahead, because weekend conference games are known to sell out.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis

The Cavalier Men’s tennis team has been a national power for the last few years.  In fact, they’ve won the last 4 National Indoor Tennis Championships.  But now the top-ranked and unbeaten Cavs have taken their prowess outside as the beautiful spring weather has arrived.  Catch men’s tennis against Duke on Friday, April 8th at 3 pm.

Women’s tennis is ranked 18th nationally and hosts NC State at noon on Friday and Wake Forest on Saturday at noon in Charlottesville.

Men’s Lacrosse

Another national power, UVa men’s lacrosse is once again nationally ranked.  Even after a few early season losses, the Hoos are ranked 9th nationally and continue to be a national title contender.  The Hoos play at beautiful Klockner Stadium on Saturday, April 9th – a nationally televised ESPN game.

Women’s Lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team – another perennial power – enters the weekend ranked 11th in the country and with a recent victory over rival Virginia Tech.  The team will take the weekend off before their final regular season game on Wednesday the 13th at George Mason.

If you’re looking for some top level college athletic events, Charlottesville is the place to be in the spring.
