  • Tree: The two magnolias bring lots of pleasure because of the gorgeous blooms that perfume the yard. The "grandfather redbud" is one of the largest around and the purple blossoms every spring are amazing backdrop for the dogwoods.
  • Walk: We walk/bike to the YMCA, downtown restaurants and theaters, and into Montford (Nine Mile and All Day Darling). Merrimon Ave is walking distance for Whits Custard, Plant and Home Grown restaurant. Trader Joes, Harris Teeter and Greenlife are nearby grocer
  • Hike: For a great 3-9 mile run or urban hike, go out our front door, up Sunset Drive. Continue to the top of Patton Mtn. and take one of several routes back down again. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Mountains-to-Sea Trail is easy access from Town Mountain Rd.
  • Breakfast: City Bakery and Waterbird are great for breakfast and an afternoon tea and working from a cafe. Both just a few blocks from here on Charlotte street.
  • Lunch: City Bakery has great salads and sandwiches on Charlotte Street. Liberty House Coffee and Cafe is great and next to Asheville Yoga Center, both 5 blocks away. Also Elements Real Food has great smoothies and vegan fare. Another fave - Early Girl on Wall St
  • Dinner: Try Jettie Rae's Oyster Bar, Bone and Broth, or Taco Temple (great Mexican), all on Charlotte Street. We enjoy walking downtown to Polanco, Salsas and Chestnut restaurants. Then a movie at Grail Moviehouse or FIne Arts Theater. A local favorite is AvenueM
  • Pub/Winery: Wicked Weed on Biltmore Ave, Catawba Brewing, and the Social Lounge Rooftop. Metro Wines on Charlotte Street has serviced many of our gatherings and have frequently tastings. They love getting to know the neighbors.
  • Living Here Has Been: Sometimes we forget how special this house really is. We were fortunate to have met the original family and to hear their stories. It motivated us to save this home and raise our family here. We discovered so many treasures along the way - old photos, bottles, the original tubs and plumbing fixtures. But most special of all, are the stories we collected from Miss Edith Holmes, whom we knew for 10 years until her passing at age 104.

    Living in this house and painstakingly restoring it has been a wonderful experience. We learned about hidden gutters, reviving old woodwork, and that everything starts with scrubbing. Who ever knew we would come to "need" two staircases! Many party toasts and speeches have been given on those front steps. The eight fireplaces and warm pine floors make every room very homey and inviting.

    To have this home on such a large, flat lot and close to everything we love about Asheville, makes this a treasure we will miss and will hold forever in our hearts.
