- View: I love to sit on the back porch at twilight and look towards the mountain range. Celo Knob is just visible through the trees in spring and fall, and the green leaves in summer are a lovely curtain around.
- Room: The living room in the afternoon has beautiful light filtering in from the west. It?s delightful in all seasons.
- Tree: This house is surrounded by trees. It?s got redbuds and a fringe tree in front, and oaks and conifers all around. It?s a true tree house!
- Walk: The house is on a loop, which is just under a mile around, plus another quarter mile down to the highway. It?s steep but wide and mostly paved, and lovely to walk in all seasons. The shaded gravel part is gorgeous for leaf looking in the fall.
- Hike: So many great spots for outdoor activities nearby! The South Toe valley is a starting point for some of the best hikes in western North Carolina. A few include Woody?s Knob, Black Mountain, and Strawberry Fields. Canoeing, kayaking, and tubing on the So

The studio provides a nice retreat for guests and teens, and the back decks have been great places for socializing. Our neighborhood is friendly, and knowing that the road will be plowed in snow is a load off our minds in winter months. It?s close enough to town that picking up something from the store is easy, but far enough away that we feel protected from the traffic and noise. And of course, living in the South Toe valley and close to Penland School has provided access to a vibrant community of locals and transplants that?s hard to beat.
