Simple Tips to Brighten Your Rooms

by Janie Midgett

Does your home need a breath of new life or a little extra light? Below are a few tips on brightening up any room.

START WITH WHITE

A little bit of white can go a long way! Painting the walls and ceiling white will immediately brighten up the room because white won’t absorb light. Think of it as a blank canvas and you can dress it up however you like.

LAMPS AND LIGHT SOURCES

I cannot stress this enough! Adding alternative sources of light in place of ceiling lights makes a world of a difference. If the space has windows, that’s a bonus. But if you’re lacking natural light, add a lamp on one of the tables, maybe a floor lamp beside a chair, or a sconce along the wall. Trust me, you’ll love how much it enhances the area. AND if you want to go a step beyond, check out Philips Hue lightbulbs that will give the room an ambiance you and your guests will love.

ACCENT WITH DARK COLORS

This may seem counterintuitive, but adding a touch of dark will make the white pop even more. If you’re working in the living room, you can accent with dark furniture, or a dark rug as seen below.

AVOID HEAVY CURTAINS

Curtains can make or break a room. If you choose to use curtains, steer clear of dense material. Instead, opt for linen or another light material.

LIGHTEN THE FLOORS

By now, you’re hopefully catching on to the light and airy theme. If you have dark floors, throw down a lighter area rug. This will help to lighten the room even more. If you’re willing to spend a little more, change out your floors for a blonde wood. A pale wood can really set the tone of the whole room and pleasantly compliments the white walls.

ADD A HOUSEPLANT (or two or three)

Having a few plants inside is great decor; it freshens up the space and adds a breath of new life.
