CURB APPEAL: Creole Cottage

Curb Appeal Creole Cottage

A former storefront gets a refresh

You only get one chance at a first impression, so make it count! A former storefront in the Brooklyn Arts District of Wilmington, North Carolina, is reminiscent of the creole cottages found in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

It’s now bursting with personality thanks to the use of bold colors and an unexpected pop of blue on the underside of the roof.

MATERIALS

Board and Batten Board and batten siding has always been one of our favorites. Vertical beams with “batten,” a vertical strip of wood covering the seams, became popular in America in the 1840s and was influenced by styles from Sweden and Norway. Classic in its heritage, the strong vertical lines work well today in a modern aesthetic, especially when painted in a striking warm black.

Metal Roof A metal roof pairs nicely with the board and batten, the lines echoing one another. These roofs can last 40 to 70 years, depending on the exact metal material, as opposed to traditional asphalt roofs, which have a life expectancy of 12 to 20 years.

The Croton “Petra” plant, commonly known as Joseph’s Coat, makes an excellent container plant for any sun drenched patio. With an array of hues in greens, yellows, reds, and oranges, it adds a fun burst of color. The Croton “Petra” can tolerate full to medium sun and prefers well drained soils to look its best. Head to your local nursery to be sure this plant will work well in your zone.
