Getting Around the Shenandoah Valley

Getting Around the Shenandoah Valley

As you’re navigating to, from, and through the Shenandoah Valley below is some helpful local knowledge on our roads, airport, and Amtrak station:

By Car

  • I-81 – North-South through the entire length of the Shenandoah Valley, including Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton, and Lexington.
  • I-64 – West-East across the southern Shenandoah Valley, including Waynesboro, a popular route to access Charlottesville, which is situated across Afton Mountain.
  • Route 11 – North-South through the entire length of the Shenandoah Valley, including Harrisonburg and Staunton. This road parallels 81 and is a popular alternative route when there is traffic on I-81.
  • Route 250 – East-West through Augusta County, including Staunton and Waynesboro–a scenic alternative route that you can take on day-trips to Charlottesville or Richmond, VA.
  • Route 340 – North-South spur route, parallel and east of 11. This popular road runs through the counties of Page (Luray), Rockingham (Elkton), and Augusta (Grottoes, Waynesboro).
