Interior designers Caroline Campbell and Erica King of Campbell King Interiors have very different design aesthetics. King prefers an eclectic, collected approach that transcends a particular genre or style, while Campbell has a masculine, bold, clean, neutral, no-frills style. “It’s the perfect match. We bring balance to one another,” shares Campbell. This juxtaposition of styles results in a layered and rich design story for their clients, as evident in this Jackson, Tennessee, home.

The clients were downsizing into their forever home—their kids had left the nest and now had kids of their own. The clients wanted a space that was warm, welcoming, and liveable, but that still felt modern with a touch of glitz. “This client reminds me so much of my mom,” laughs King. “Her style is sophisticated, modern, and glamorous.” This instant rapport parlayed into a level of trust between the clients and the design team.

Campbell and King were able to translate the clients’ desire for glitz and glam into an elevated and sophisticated home that still feels inviting. Vintage rugs add touches of color throughout the home, while the furnishings remain mostly neutral. Traditional pieces with modern lines and unexpected additions like the zebra ottoman make the rooms feel collected and lived-in.

To keep a neutral space from feeling too cold or sparse, Campbell offers this advice: “It can’t all be new if it’s neutral. If you buy everything from a store, it winds up feeling lackluster. It won’t feel truly comfortable and will lack a softness.” Instead, find unique vintage pieces that speak to you. In the foyer, the team used the large wood commode, a beautiful vintage piece that the owners already had, and paired it with an edgy, modern light fixture to keep it from feeling too formal. The oversized patinated mirror bounces the light around the room, making the petite foyer feel larger than it is.

It’s also important to create a mix of affordable staples mixed with showpieces, like the handmade leather chandelier in the dining room and the Linden lamp by Kelly Wearstler found in the living room. “It’s the perfect lamp. The finish and scale somehow work well with every style. It’s become a bit of a signature element in a lot of our homes,” laughs King.

Items that the owners purchased on their own include the pendant light fixtures that now adorn the kitchen island. “The owners saw them while on vacation in New Orleans and fell in love with them,” explains Campbell. They used these sculptural scrolling pendants as a jumping off point in the kitchen to help dictate the direction of some of the finishes.

Shaker cabinets in a soft gray (Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore), with polished nickel hardware and stainless steel appliances are paired with a large marble slab backsplash with lovely wave-like veining. The scene-stealing hood adds a dramatic flair with its varying sheens of silver-hued metals.

“When it comes to design, it’s not just about spaces looking pretty. You’ll take a room that was rarely used because it lacked purpose, and with intentional design, it’s suddenly your favorite room in the house. It makes you feel good,” shares King.

Eager to create similar depth in your own home? Campbell and King advise going to local home decor stores like HomeGoods, Marshalls, Target, and thrift shops to gather accessories that you think might work. Buy twice the amount you think you will need so that you can bring it into your space and try out different combinations. Layer in art, throws, and pillows to add to the collected feel, mixing genres and textures. Return what you don’t love.
