What do feng shui, the desert, modern architecture, and cowgirl boots have in common? This was the riddle interior designer Jenny Slingerland of Black Ink Interiors needed to solve.

Her client, a cowgirl at heart, had recently purchased a newly constructed home in the Rio Verde community, northeast of Scottsdale, Arizona. She enlisted Slingerland and her team during the construction phase to oversee the entire project—from selecting finishes (including flooring, cabinetry, appliances, and lighting) to fully furnishing and accessorizing the home.

east meets west

“This project was really fun and rewarding, but also a little challenging,” shares Slingerland. “We had to follow the principles of feng shui, which was new for us.” The floor plan needed to produce a harmonious energetic flow, incorporating elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. This emphasis on eastern design philosophy had to be balanced with the owner’s western roots and her collection of western art and sculptures.

To achieve this harmony, warm textures and natural finishes were selected. The kitchen is clad in dark wood cabinetry with a marble tile backsplash that extends all the way to the ceiling. A polished stone island dramatically spills onto the floor with waterfall edges on both sides. Oversized metal and glass pendants hang between dark wood beams. “The layout of the home is ideal—open kitchen, living, and dining areas with expansive sliding doors so that there is an easy flow between the outdoor and indoor spaces,” explains Slingerland.

In the living room, a gas fireplace is flanked by floating glass shelves, adorned with modern accessories and strong geometric shapes. Patterns in cool tones on the armchairs and pillows counterbalance the warm wood coffee table. Rustic notes make an appearance in the hair-on hide trim of the cream sectional, and nailhead trim detailing on various upholstered furnishings like the island stools and dining chairs.

Mixed metals dance in a quiet symphony throughout the home. The primary bathroom glistens—a marble and glass enclosed shower serves as the backdrop for the free-standing soaker tub. Crystal and gold sconces cast a warm glow at night. In a powder room, modern crystal and champagne gold sconces set against dark wallpaper bring a touch of glamour, delighting each guest who enters.

“My goal is to make sure that the client is comfortable in their home and that they truly love being there with their friends and family,” explains Slingerland. It’s a sophisticated yet cozy and comfortable space for the owner and her extended family to gather. “I am really proud of what we were able to achieve. We were able to bring in feng shui elements, mixed with her rustic heritage, into this modern home.”

Would this balance of raw and refined work in your home? To add a touch of effortless elegance, try incorporating natural elements like dark woods, tonal textiles, and metals in varying tones of copper, gold, and silver.
