Tips to Throwing a Housewarming Party

Housewarming Party

Congratulations, you’ve officially landed your new nest! Now that the hard work of moving in is behind you, here’s how to celebrate with the fun and stress-free housewarming party that suits you best. Remember to be mindful of COVID-19 restrictions in your area. Consider providing your guests with colorful party face masks or move the party outside!

Invitations

Whether you use one of the many free online evite services or go old school with pen and paper, your housewarming invitations should include these basics:

  • A few lines welcoming your guests to share in your happiness
  • Date and time, address, and contact information
  • A note on food and refreshments: Should your guests expect a full meal? Will there be a full bar, or is it BYOB?

Gifts

Some people want housewarming gifts (who can blame them!) and others don’t. For those of you who don’t, consider adding a line to your invitation that specifies a no-gift policy. For those of you who do, don’t worry. By asking outright you may risk offending your guests, but unless stated otherwise, invitees will often assume that gifts are expected. Remember to send out personalized thank you notes to your well wishers!

No Rush

There’s no rule that says you need to throw a housewarming party within weeks of moving in. Many people wait a month or more. Your house is the star of the show—take the time to make it a home. That being said, your guests are in your corner and nobody expects perfection. In short, go easy on yourself!

New to Town

Are you the new kid on the block? Use your housewarming as an opportunity to build new friendships and expand your community. Invite the friendly faces you’ve met so far and ask them each to bring a couple of their favorite people. Voila! You’ve doubled your circle of friends in just a few hours.

Themes

Happy Helpers: Is there a room that still needs painting? Boxes still waiting to be unpacked? Call up some helping hands. This kind of housewarming should be reserved for close friends and family. You will feel comfortable exposing your messy boxes and half empty paint cans, and your loved ones will feel fulfilled knowing they are easing your load. Tackle chores together with beverages in hand and show your gratitude with a hearty meal at the end of the day.

Game Night: Housewarming guests often range from friends and family to work colleagues and new neighbors. A game night is the ultimate icebreaker and conversation starter. Strangers will become friends over rounds of charades and your home will forever be associated with fun.

Potluck with a Twist: Moving into a new house is no easy feat. Throwing a potluck party means less cleanup and more savings. Not only is this approach easy on the host, it is also a communal activity that brings your guests together and allows them to participate in the success of the party! Just make sure to serve—and tell your guests to bring—single serving options like bags of chips or canned drinks. We know this isn’t exactly environmentally friendly, but it’s better to be COVID-cautious for a bit longer!

Garden Party: A garden party is a spring and summer housewarming classic for a reason. Show off your backyard, fire up the grill, play some bocce—you name it! A garden party can be as low key as an outdoor barbecue and folding tables. Or, you can make it classy with lights, elegant seating, organic hors d’oeuvres, and a signature homemade cocktail.

Open House: Although it’s less intimate, this traditional housewarming approach is the most flexible for both the host and the invitees. Your guests can come and go as their schedules permit. Offer a few drinks and a charcuterie board to snack on as you give them a relaxed house tour.

Ambiance is Key

  • If your party is an evening affair, ditch the overhead lighting and opt for the warm glow of accent lamps and candlelight. Invest in a budget friendly and reusable set of tea light holders and arrange them on mantle pieces, side tables, and bookshelves.
  • Fresh flowers beautify your space instantly. Place a few bouquets around your home, highlighting prized pieces of furniture and creating a bright backdrop for your party.
  • Music is a must and it’s free, too! Decide what kind of vibe you want for your party and create a playlist to match.

This is an exciting time to share your new adventure with your community. Above all else,  remember to have fun. You deserve it!

Spread the love
