Be Prepared!

Scar from the Lion King spoke some good wisdom for a mean, old lion. And although hurricanes are no laughing matter, we are urging our clients to please, please — BE PREPARED! I’m sure you have seen tons of lists and “tips” from local news outlets to friends on Facebooks and we’re not trying to cause panic, but we want to be realistic about the potential dangers of this storm. We’ve complied a short, yet important list, to help all our friends and clients to, Be Prepared for Hurricane Florence!

17 Tips to Prepare for Hurricane Florence

1. Charge any device that provides light. Laptops, tablets, cameras, video cameras, and old phones. Old cell phones can still be used for dialing 911. Charge external battery backups.

2. Fill anything you can with water. Wash all trash cans, big and small, and fill with water for flushing toilets. Line outdoor trash cans with trash bags, fill with water and store in the garage. You can always add bleach to sterilize. Bathtubs can be used for flushing toilets, water bottles can be used for washing hands, tupperware can be filled with water, frozen, and used to help keep food fresh longer.

3. Cook any meats and other perishable foods in advance. You can freeze cooked food. Hard boil eggs make a great snack for your first day without power.

4. Be well hydrated before the storm hits and avoid salty foods that make you dehydrated.

5. No A/C can quickly make your house stink! Wash old sheets and clothes before the storm, toss out any expiring food, clean cat litter boxes, and empty all trash cans in the house, including bathrooms.

6. Bring indoors or secure anything that will fly around such as hoses or potted plants. Put these items in the house, or in the garage. Bring in patio furniture and grills. Tie down trampolines.

7. Place anything important and necessary in a backpack or small file box that is easy to grab. Include your wallet with ID, phone, hand sanitizer, snacks, etc. Get plastic sleeves or Ziploc bags for important documents.

8. Make sure you have cash on hand.

9. Stock up on pet food and fill up bowls of water for pets. If you are leaving PLEASE take your pets with you.

10. Refill any medications. Most insurance companies allow for two emergency refills per year.

11. Fill your propane tanks. You can boil water, make coffee, and use it for more than grilling meat. Get an extra, if possible.

12. Lower your A/C in advance and lower temperatures in your fridges.

13. Gather all candles, flashlights, lighters, matches, batteries, and other items and keep them accessible.

14. Find the safest place in your home, such as a closet under the stairs, and use it as your emergency safe place . Store the items you’ll need in that location for the brunt of the storm. Remember, the storm is coming from the SOUTHEAST.

15. When all else fails, use baby wipes.

16. Pack a suitcase just in case you need to evacuate. Be sure your car has full tank of gas and be prepared!

17. Most importantly, look out for each other. Check on elderly neighbors. Be kind to the people working at Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, and your local grocery while you’re preparing for the storm. They are working and serving you.

For those of you that leave the area, it is possible that you will not be able to return until several days after the storm has passed, maybe even a week. Please keep this in mind and stay away until at least Monday. And when you come back, it would be a good thing to bring resources for everyone else.
