Let’s dive into the lingo…the following phrases and pronunciations will be helpful to know should you decide to visit (or relocate) to this area!

// AT – Appalachian (pronounced App-a-LATCH-a) Trail, a 2,180+ mile trail that runs through the Shenandoah Valley from Maine to Georgia, or Georgia to Maine, depending on your perspective. Several of our cities and towns are Appalachian Trail designated communities.

// BBQ Chicken – vinegar-based BBQ chicken smoked early in the morning as a fundraiser and sold at fire departments, Ruritan Clubs (defined below), and under tents in parking lots near popular intersections.

// Lawn Party – summertime festival, often held as fundraisers for area fire departments, which include music, food, parades, games, rides, and fireworks

// McGaheysville – pronounced Mc-Gak-ees-ville, “ah” makes a “k” sound

// Rocktown – nickname for Harrisonburg because of the large amount of limestone in the city and surrounding areas (another nickname for Harrisonburg? The Friendly City!)

// Ruritan – community service club located in small towns and rural areas

// Staunton – pronounced Stan-ton, the “u” is silent

// SAW – common acronym for Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro
