Live Where You Love: Charlottesville’s Entrepreneurial Economy

As Charlottesville real estate experts, we’re often asked: Where do people work in Charlottesville?

It’s not an easy question to answer.  While there are jobs in Charlottesville, there aren’t gobs and gobs of ‘large’ employers.  Sure, we have the obvious ones: UVa, Martha Jefferson, Albemarle County, City of Charlottesville, State Farm, etc, etc.  In fact, according to the Virginia Employment Commission, there are only 7 employers in the Charlottesville MSA that employ more than 1000 people.  Check out the list of the Charlottesville area’s largest employers here.

Another major source of employment actually lies outside of the MSA.  There are countless residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle who live here, but their jobs are based elsewhere.  It’s seems like every day that this trend is becoming more and more common…and it’s enabling more people to choose to live where they want to live and not have their job dictate their home address.

Because it’s such a great place to live, Charlottesville also fosters a very entrepreneurial environment.  We created this next edition of our Live Where You Love video series to tell a little about the entrepreneurial culture here.  We’ve spotlighted Willow Tree Apps (who just received recognition from INC Magazine as one of the fastest growing companies in the USA) and Cardigan…and also got some insight from Carter Hoerr, a consultant at the Darden School Foundation.

So, check out the latest installment in our Charlottesville video series…

Spread the love
