Pick Me a Winner

Looking for a day date with your fam this fall? It’s been a tradition of ours to head to Apple Hill Orchard & Cider Mill, here in Morganton, for a little fresh air, apple pickin’, and a doughnut eatin’ good time. Apple picking is something everyone can enjoy, so bring the kids and grandparents along. Please leave the furry friends at home, though.

Upon arrival, check in to get your apple pickin’ bag and your wagon if you plan to pick a lot of apples. After check in, you can head out to walk the orchard and pick away. Remember to only pick what you plan to purchase. While in the orchard,, it’s also a great time to pull out your phone and capture a few spontaneous moments of the kiddos picking their apples (and maybe sneaking a taste, too).

After you’ve finished picking, head back in to the market to pay for your apples and check out the items in the market. They have several varieties of apples, cider, fresh honey, jams and jellies, and more! It’s hard to go away empty handed. A favorite of many are the apple cider slushies, and whether your littles are 2 or 22, everyone loves the taste of Apple Hill’s warm cinnamon apple doughnuts. Ours don’t ever seem to make it home!

The orchard is open through Christmas Eve, when I make one last trip out to the farm to pick up cider so we have some on hand during the holidays. I love offering a cup of mulled cider to warm the hands and souls of our guests.

To avoid the crowds this time of the year, we like to go early, at around 9 or 10 a.m. To get there, you’ll take Enola Rd./Exit 104 and head south away from Downtown Morganton. Turn right onto Pleasant Hill Avenue at the church and follow the road back until you see the parking lot. Happy picking!
