Agent: Lisa Merritt

During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with Lisa Merritt, a Broker with Nest Realty in Durham, North Carolina.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to Durham?
Lisa Merritt: I grew up in Marietta, Georgia, eating tacos or casseroles nearly every day of my life. My mom is Mexican and my dad grew up in Marietta. I went to App State in Boone, North Carolina, for college and fell in love with NC, so decided to stay! I moved to the Raleigh-Durham area in 2010 and have loved every minute of it.

NR: How did you get into real estate?
LM: My dad used to give us a “house rating form” when we were kids when we would go look at houses—even though we weren’t even in the market. I loved dreaming about the possibilities of what I could do in that home (mainly just thinking about the best place for me to do cartwheels), but since then, real estate has been an interest for me. I’ve been in the nonprofit field for the past 15 years, and was looking for something new that aligned with my interests, used my skill set, and was helping people!

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
LM: For the past 15 years, I’ve worked in international nonprofit leadership. My passion has always been to connect people to strategic opportunities for global impact, and I did this by establishing an international volunteer program for individuals to experience the world in a unique way. It wasn’t about tourism, but it was about recognizing life and dignity in people and serving one another. Having the business experience of starting and running nonprofits and developing engagement programs, along with working directly with and serving alongside a wide variety of people, certainly prepared me for real estate.

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
LM: I did a decent amount of research before committing to Nest Realty, and the two main elements that convinced me to choose Nest were the collaborative and genuine culture and the amazing marketing! It was hands down the best in those categories of all the places I looked.

NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
LM: The people. I love helping people realize their dream! And I also love seeing different floor plans, decor, and architecture!

NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
LM: Purposeful, outdoorsy, clean, fun, and handy.

NR: Who would be your dream client?
LM: Ellen! That’d be fun!

NR: What is your favorite season in Durham?
LM: Hands down, my favorite season in North Carolina is FALL! Warming up by a bonfire with your favorite drink, a pair of jeans, a flannel, and good friends is priceless.
