During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this in installment, we chat with Nancy Massey, Associate Broker at Nest Realty New River Valley.
Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to Blacksburg?
Nancy Massey: A native Virginian, I moved to Blacksburg in 2009 when my husband, John, began working at Virginia Tech. We live downtown and love the pedestrian lifestyle that comes with small town living. #Live Where You Love!
NR: How did you get into real estate?
NM: I received my license in 2005 after purchasing and remodeling several homes. I’ve always been passionate about architecture and interior design, and now I’m lucky; every day is unique, challenging, and fun. This is the perfect job for me.
NR:What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
NM: After earning a Masters of Arts and Teaching, I was a 5th grade elementary school teacher. Teaching taught me to be flexible, to think quickly, and to choose my battles and negotiate well.
NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
NM: I was attracted to Nest for three reasons. First, the Friends of Nest marketing program is unique and special. Second, Nest agents are Associate Brokers or Brokers in training. I value education and commitment to our craft, and no other firm represents both better than Nest. Third, and perhaps most important, I liked and admired the existing Nest agents. We are family.
NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
NM: I love the hunt! As an Accredited Buyer Agent, I am always excited to see what’s behind the next door.
NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
NM: Blacksburg and Christiansburg. I work with a lot of VT families looking for primary and secondary homes.
NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
NM: Organized, focused, kind, dedicated, and educated.
NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
NM: Save for your downpayment and don’t expect the house to be perfect. Perfect homes don’t exist. Live by the 80/20 rule. If the house has 80% of what you want, your ownership will create the other 20%.
NR: What is your favorite season in Blacksburg?
NM: Summer. The mountains of SWVA are beautiful when green.
