During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with Tom Metcalf, a Broker with Nest Realty in Asheville, North Carolina.
Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! What brought you to Asheville?
Tom Metcalf: I’ve always loved houses—even as a kid, I would create developments out of red clay mud. I would get lost for hours…. I’m originally from Asheville and I feel so blessed to have the life I’m living.
NR: How did you get into real estate?
TM: Before my real estate career, I was in art direction in publishing. But as publishing went digital, I went in the other direction; I started doing home projects and ended up flipping a cute bungalow in West Asheville. After that, I was obsessed with houses and helping my friends find houses. That’s when I knew I was hooked on real estate!
NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
TM: I was an art director before doing real estate. I think being a creative type with business skills really set me up to be successful. I can see potential in just about anything. The designer in me helps my clients visually figure out different ways to approach something. I’m most happy when I’m helping my sellers or buyers make their dreams of homeownership come true. I truly love what I do.
NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
TM: I’ve always been attracted to the Nest brand! It fits my style and vibe perfectly! I love marketing and branding and it’s just a natural fit. I also prefer smaller boutique firms like Nest.
NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
TM: Helping people! Finding it before someone else does! I like researching and stats and at the end of the day, I’m competitive and I’m embracing this to the fullest!
NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
TM: Marketing is my specialty! I love selling houses, from staging them to photography and videos to writing copy for ads. I love a challenge!
NR: What makes you different from other agents? What sets you apart?
TM: My attitude is not the norm…I’m laid back, but not quite. I will jump in and get it done! My clients always say they love how I don’t pressure them, that I’m always patient with them. I really like to think I’m a good listener and I’m just me, I don’t pretend to be anything that I am not. What you see is what you get. And you can best believe, I will get your house sold or I will find you the perfect match for where you are in the moment.
NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
TM: Happy, strong, trusting, intense, and respectful.
NR: Who would be your dream client?
TM: Honestly, I really have the best clients! My dream clients are people who know what they want and are willing to do the work to get it. That’s the perfect vibe for me.
NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
TM: Always trust your gut! Don’t take in too much so quickly…. Don’t buy something you know needs a ton of work. Stick to what you know and find balance.
NR: What is your favorite season in Asheville?
TM: Halloween is my absolute favorite!!!! Especially on the west side!
