Meet the Agent: Tom Sherman

During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this in installment, we chat with Tom Sherman, a Broker at Nest Realty Asheville.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to Asheville.
Tom Sherman: I grew up in a small midwestern town called Ames, Iowa. After high school I moved to Arcata, California (the far North Coast!) to attend college and experience living near the beach and mountains. It was a big change from cornfields and soybeans to say the least. After living there for 5 years I relocated to Denver, Colorado where I worked in service industry management and healthcare administration. In an effort to be closer to family I moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 2012. I had never stepped foot in the Southern United States but almost instantly fell in love with Western North Carolina and it’s beautiful mountains.

NR: How did you get into real estate?
TS: A good friend of mine attended Cumbie and Trull Real Estate school and made an abrupt career change to become a Realtor. I quickly began to see how successful he was in the Asheville market and how he truly enjoyed this new path he was on. I followed in his footsteps and before starting school worked as a real estate assistant specializing in REO properties.

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
TS: Before becoming a Realtor I worked for several years in service industry management and then healthcare administration. The daily human interaction I had with customers and patients is just like helping my clients buy or sell their homes. I love working with people and could never see myself sitting in a cubicle all day.

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
TS: The people — it truly feels like a family. The marketing — sleek, streamlined and modern. The community outreach — whether it’s the Nest County Fair, marketing mailers, friendly postcards, or holiday cheer Nest is constantly engaging our community and making it a happier place.

NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
TS: The smile I see on my client’s face when they get the keys to their new home.

NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
TS: The overall experience — providing my clients trustworthy, reliable and superior customer service throughout the entire process.

NR: What makes you different from other agents? What sets you apart?
TS: My good looks, of course!

NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
TS: Loyal, reverent, helpful, friendly, and cheerful.

NR: Who would be your dream client?
TS: I’ve heard rumors the Obamas were eyeing property in Asheville…

NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
TS: Do your research and keep your options open when choosing professionals to walk you through this process.

NR: What is your favorite season in Asheville?
TS: Fall. Love that colorful foliage.
