During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with agent Johnny May, a Broker with Nest Realty in Durham, North Carolina.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! What brought you to Durham?
Johnny May: I’m a husband and a father of three girls. I moved to Durham to live near my brother.

NR: How did you get into real estate?
JM: Real estate has always been an interest for me and I finally decided after thinking about this career for years to go all in and begin this adventure.

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
JM: My previous career was 20 years with the international nonprofit organization Young Life. In a job where you are constantly inviting people into relationships, you have great gains—along with a lot of rejection. Real estate is exactly that.

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
JM: This firm has a great reputation. After meeting the Broker in Charge and the owner of Nest, it was a slam dunk decision for me, if they would have me. The training, support, and relationship between Brokers is not cutthroat as you would assume. They don’t function out of scarcity, they help one another out.

NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
JM: My favorite part of being an agent is meeting all kinds of people from all walks of life. I generally love people and enjoy hearing their stories. It’s a privilege to serve them as an agent.

NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
JM: My specific areas of expertise are in the soft skill intangible zone. I can read people well, and I’m a savvy negotiator. I love poker, which can serve clients well when they’re trying to find the right home at the right price to suit their needs.

NR: What makes you different from other agents? What sets you apart?
JM: Something that will set me apart from most agents will be the authentic experience people have. People are drawn to authenticity, and I’m naturally comfortable in my own skin.

NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
JM: Energetic, fun, competitive, friendly, and initiator are five adjectives that describe me well.

NR: Who would be your dream client?
JM: My dream client would be the person reading this, because every client or potential client is my dream client! YOU are my dream client!

NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
JM: First time home buyers should realize that if a Realtor finds a home that checks most of your key boxes, it’s a great option. Most homes do not check all the boxes!

NR: What is your favorite season in Durham?
JM: My favorite season is the fall, because of the pleasant weather—as well as football season!

NR: Do you have any other unique qualities that make you a great agent?
JM: As a transplant to the area, I’m in a unique position to help other people who have moved here from far away. I understand what they’re going through in a way agents who have lived in the area forever could never understand.
