During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with Whitney Beckett, an agent with Nest Realty in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! What brought you to the area?
Whitney Beckett: I’ve lived in the NRV my entire life! My (very big) family has been here for generations! I left for grad school, but had to come back!
NR: How did you get into real estate?
WB: It was a bit of a winding road, but it was always something I wanted to do.
NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
WB: My first real job was in a property management office in Blacksburg when I was only 15. I ended up working there through undergrad at Virginia Tech, and eventually became the property manager for a pretty big portfolio. After that, I worked for a local nonprofit foundation dealing with donated real estate and commercial lease administration for four years. I learned how to understand contracts, craft effective marketing, cultivate relationships, manage assets, and communicate effectively.
NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
WB: I was always drawn to Nest’s attractive marketing, but when I started to learn more about the philosophy behind it, I really started to feel like it spoke to me even more. I love the culture of building and maintaining relationships with the people you work for, and the real sense of service and stewardship that seems to exist at Nest.
NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
WB: Being that person that has the ability to be a true partner, step in, and reduce someone’s stress.
NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
WB: I think I have a few! Knowledge of the area, for one!
NR: What makes you different from other agents? What sets you apart?
WB: Besides the fact that I’ve worked in or around real estate since before I had a driver’s license? I have a depth of knowledge surrounding real estate investment, property management, and short term rentals.
NR: What are five adjectives that describe you?
WB: Empathetic, creative, considerate, dedicated, and nurturing.
NR: Who would be your dream client?
WB: I actually had a dream client recently! I got to work with a single dad who had saved up for his first home. Seeing him become empowered through the process and being able to be there to see him open the door himself for the first time was the best. It was such a proud moment, and I was so happy to be a part of it!
NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
WB: Don’t think you have to have it all figured out before you get started! The right agent will be there every step of the way to teach you, shepherd you through all the steps, fight for you, and cheer you on!
NR: What is your favorite season in Blacksburg?
WB: Hands down: fall. The leaves, the crisp air, the sweaters, but mostly the football. We tailgate for every Hokie home game!
NR: What word would you love for people to describe you as?
WB: Refreshing.
