Preparing for Vacation: Neighbors

Trusted neighbors are your first line of defense when you take a vacation.
When you are leaving town for an expended period of time, it’s always a good idea to ask a couple of your trusted neighbors to keep an eye on your house while you are away.
Be sure to tell them
• when you will be gone.
• how to contact you in case of an emergency.
• if you expect anyone to be at your house during your vacation.
• if you have any lights or appliances on timers to simulate occupancy.
You could also ask them to
• remove any flyers left on your door/mailbox. These help thieves identify empty homes.
• move your car occasionally so it looks like someone is home.
• park at your house if you are taking your car on your trip.
Notify Your Neighborhood Watch
Many local neighborhoods have member-supported security patrols that employ off-duty Atlanta police officers. The officers retain full policing powers so they are able to stop and question suspicious persons, ask for IDs, and check for prior arrests or outstanding warrants. These programs take a proactive approach to security by helping to prevent incidents from happening, and they also offer an extra eye on your home. Members are encouraged to notify patrol officers before going out of town, so that the patrol can pay special attention to your home while you are away.
