Sprucing Up for Spring!

Spring is for new beginnings

By Laura Moye

As the temperatures rise, flowers begin to bloom, and the days get longer, it’s the perfect time to begin that special home improvement project you’ve been thinking about.

I was excited to get started on one of my own last week! Here at our house, we’re doing some special sprucing up of our own that will help us enjoy our property more, especially during the warmer months. We’re upgrading siding and repainting the exterior of our house, as well as replacing some of our gutters that are beyond repair. Anything that adds curb appeal and directs water away from your home is a smart investment!

Our home, a 1952 ranch, features painted brick on the street-facing side. But the sides and back includes a hodgepodge of different materials. Over the last few weeks, we’ve removed aluminum, vinyl, old wood and HardiePlank. We’re replacing it with wood Board- and-Batten siding.

Board-and-Batten is craftsman style, with flat panels and vertical battens. Years ago, battens were used to conceal the seams between boards. Today, they are typically installed over panels of hardwood. which is what we’re doing along the sides and back of house before we paint.
