Who says a proper building must have studs and drywall? We met three business owners who decided that conventional building was a bore. Instead, they curated unique materials to create extraordinary places…
PRO RE NATA
The Pro Re Nata Farm Brewery in Crozet, VA, has been a local hot spot since it first opened in 2015. A need for additional outdoor space lead to the creation of the container bar. Using nine “K” Line shipping containers sourced from Richmond, VA, a beautiful two-story bar now resides at the back of the lush property.
Complete with sparkling cafe lights, greenery, and seating, the bar is the perfect spot for sipping a happy hour pint, or hosting a private event.

ANNE BONNY’S BAR & GRILL
What was once a barge on the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, NC, is now a floating bar. The historic Henrietta riverboat used to dock at this barge, and in May of 2017, Anne Bonny’s Bar & Grill opened as the first floating restaurant in Wilmington.
Situated along the popular downtown Riverwalk, Anne Bonny’s has become a crowd-pleasing destination, known for their ship’s wheel pretzel—a delicious and HUGE soft pretzel that’s big enough to share with the whole table. Wash it down with one of the refreshing frozen wine drinks—we recommend the frozen strawberry rosé.
DOUBLE D’S COFFEE & DESSERTS
Double D’s Coffee Bus is the adorable bright red double decker coffee shop, smack dab in the middle of downtown Asheville, NC. The local landmark is a favorite for its delicious coffee creations and quirky decor. This 1963 Lodekka model double decker bus originally carried passengers around England in the 1960s and 1970s, then made its way to Atlanta, GA, and eventually found its permanent home at the corner of Biltmore Ave. and Aston Street in 1999.
Downstairs is the coffee and dessert bar, and upstairs on the observation deck you’ll find turquoise wallpaper, ornate ceiling tins, and sparkly chandeliers.
DIY PALLET FURNITURE
When it comes to your own home, think outside the box! Try something fun like using pallets as raised garden beds, or building your own pallet furniture!
Pallet Table: Head to your local hardware store to purchase four heavy-duty casters to add to the bottom of a pallet, then add a custom-cut piece of glass to the top…and voila, you’ve got a groovy pallet table.
Pallet Couch: If you’re feeling a little more ambitious, you can create a low-level pallet couch by adjoining several pallets for a corner couch, or adding casters to make them moveable. Top with thick foam or cushions.
We want to see your own pallet creations! Share your images on social media with the hashtag: #SOnesty
