On the maps since 1949, Walker Park is an eight-acre park that sits on a plateau nestled between I-20 and Memorial Dr Highway. The first part of the 1900’s have seen many transformation of the park and the area. See how the area developed through the years.
Within the Edgewood community – now bolstering a growing, varied and diverse population – conversations about Walker Park, including its dysfunctional space and lack of amenities, became abundant. Since 2013 Friends of Walker Park volunteers have helped designed a master plan for the park and sought funding for projects that will significantly increase interest and use of Walker Park by providing amenities and functional space for park customers. Last fall the park hosted Atlanta’s first ever Mac & Cheese Festival.
Today amenities at Walker Park include
- a new playground (thanks to a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)
- soccer fields
- a tennis court
- and a community garden
The organic community garden at Walker Park began in the fall of 2014, with a grant from Love Your Block foundation. In 2015 we had our first organic crop, from 5 large, 4′ x 8′ cedar raised beds (and 5 little 2′ x 2′ beds). We grew squash, peas, cucumbers, beans, turnip greens, parsley, radishes, watermelon, zucchini and one tomato plant, all from seeds! This year, so far, we have planted our 2016 crop in 4 of the big beds, and 5 little beds and we have sprouts!
With a donation of cedar wood from Park Pride, the park is currently building 10 new cedar beds.
