City of Roanoke - South

Affectionately called "SoRo" by residents, this is one of the oldest areas of the greater Roanoke area. Historic homes in South Roanoke retain much of their 1920s charm. Health care is one of the main industries in the area, including the world-class research center. You may also hear this area referred to as "Crystal Spring," a name that comes from the natural phenomenon that provides water to the South Roanoke area.

Health Care Industry & Research: Located in South Roanoke, the Biomedical Research Institute is part of Virginia Tech, and hosts researchers from all over the globe. The Institute is comprised of several different departments, all focused on the biomedical and health science ecosystem. The Carilion Clinic is a health care provider that has a large campus in South Roanoke and provides health care services and education across the greater Roanoke area.

Tree-Lined Streets with Sidewalks: Much of the housing stock in SoRo can be found along tree-lined streets with sidewalks. Homes have character and architectural interest, and buyers appreciate that all of this charm can be found just minutes from the city center.

Sweet Donkey Coffee is a hip, local cafe located in a historic house. It serves gourmet coffees, teas, and pastries. On Friday nights you will find live music and a food truck for "Trucks and Tunes" as the whole neighborhood finds its way to this friendly spot. Kids can play and adults can enjoy beer and wine!

Jefferson Street

Jefferson Street is one of the main arteries by which you can traverse much of Roanoke. Start in SoRo, travel past the Research Institute, walk along along the river, and then find your way to your favorite Downtown restaurant for dinner.

The River and Rail

This bistro provides local, seasonal Southern food and cocktails in a stylish space, originally home to the Lipes Pharmacy. You won't be disappointed if you try the deviled eggs!
