Downtown Roanoke

Downtown Roanoke has undergone a transformation since the mid 2000s, with more and more people working and living within the downtown district. Full of historic charm, the bulk of development downtown happened originally in the 1920s, so the history of these modern residences adds to the draw of the city's redevelopment efforts.

Key Features

The Museum District: Downtown Roanoke plays host to many of the museums in the greater Roanoke area. You could spend the entire day exploring the Science Museum of Western Virginia, the Virginia Transportation Museum, and the Taubman Museum of Art. There are more than 14 museums in the area, and some really interesting ones if you're looking for something more quirky—like the Roanoke Pinball Museum!

Walkability: Who needs a car when you live in Downtown Roanoke? Residents downtown can walk to work, small grocery stores, a pharmacy, shops, restaurants, breweries, Elmwood Park, and even the bus and train stations! Be sure to hit the Farmer's Market daily for your seasonal produce!

Big Lick Brewing Company

Originally a small nano brewery, Big Lick Brewing Company has developed a passionate following and has grown steadily since they first opened. Now located on Salem Avenue, this brewery features both an indoor space and an outdoor beer garden. Check out the weekly menu online to see what's on tap! Though no food is served by the brewery, you can order from two local favorites (Beamer's 25 and Tuco's Taqueria) and have it delivered to your table at Big Lick.

Elmwood Park

This large, city-owned park located in the center of the City of Roanoke has many different areas to explore, including a Peter Pan Playground and a 4,000 seat amphitheater that hosts concerts and festivals. In the summer, little ones will love the water fountains at the base of the amphitheater stage. (Bring a towel!)
