- View: Looking at the Shenandoah Valley from my bedroom windows. Day or night, in all seasons, the view is wonderful. In wintertime, looking out the kitchen window lets me see a small mountain ponds through the forest and past the ravine behind my home.
- Room: Having coffee in the kitchen while people drive or bike up and down the mountain. During snow storms, two large John Deere tractors and VDOT trucks run 24/7 to clear the road. It is so quiet when it snows, except for VDOT keeping us safe.
- Tree: My home on the Massanutten mountain range is surrounded on three sides by a forest that goes on for miles. There are several types of oak trees, dogwoods, yellow poplar, and red maple.
- Walk: I love walking on the acre surrounding my home. A short drive over the mountain takes you to scenic Luray with its magnificent Greenway and Lake Arrowhead. New Market's Community Park has a walking path with exercise stations, and covered picnic areas.
- Hike: Go to https://www.alltrails.com/us/virginia/new-market/ to see the nine hiking trails near my home of varying difficulty levels and gorgeous views. For a more challenging trail, you can access Skyline Drive near Luray, with an elevation gain of 11,227 ft.
- Breakfast: Southern Kitchen in New Market is a favorite for breakfast and has been in business since 1955. The building is well maintained and kept very clean. They have an extensive menu and the food is very good.
- Lunch: Kathy's Diner has a wonderful Hillbilly burger with all the fixings.
- Dinner: Miller's Grille is a great place for steak.
- Living Here Has Been: It has been a privilege to be the lone shepherd of this home for the last 15 years. There were years when my two little Westie dogs and I walked the property daily until they both passed over the rainbow bridge. Some knew them as the New Market Westies, I am told. We often explored New Market, Luray, and even Bayse parks. I have learned so much living on a mountain and greatly respect nature, VDOT, and Law Enforcement. I have seen red foxes, little gray foxes, groundhogs, and more. An Opossum momma dropped off her babies in my flower beds. Rescue said it is the opossum way of letting their little ones be independent. Each year is different; one never knows what new or rare bird, insect, or mammal will appear. I have seen black bears walking up the slow lane of Hwy 211 and a young one scampering up the mountain behind the house. Don't feed the hummingbirds (ground wasps will arrive, too). Don't feed the bears; they will feint and pounce but back away to safely stay away from humans.
