Beat the Heat in Charlottesville

Summer Fun Activities

Summer Fun Activities for the Whole Family

This summer, don’t let the heat catch up to you! Stay busy with all that Charlottesville has to offer. Here are some ideas to keep in mind for July and August:

Nighttime Tunes

On a variety of nights during the spring and summer The Garage opens its door to host artists from all across Virginia. The Garage is basically what it sounds like, a small garage downtown that uses the hill across the street in Emancipation Park as seating for the audience. Blankets are a must, donations to the artists are optional. The beautiful music paired with the warm Charlottesville nights create the perfect evening for music lovers.

Jump In

Located just west of Charlottesville on the edge of the Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Hole at Sugar Hollow is a great place to cool off in the Virginia heat. The experience includes a hike culminating in a swimming hole. The walk from the parking lot to the hole is about one and a half miles, but don’t worry, it is an easy one with no serious inclines or declines. You can wade or jump in, but be careful, there is no lifeguard on duty. Here’s a great blog with details about the trail, directions, and parking.

Hometown Fine Art

Searching for Charlottesville’s very own MoMA? Look into visiting the Fralin Museum of Art located on the University of Virginia’s grounds. Their art collection ranges from modern to digital, from pottery to collage. Their upcoming exhibition is entitled Asian Art from the Permanent and Select Private Collections, and it will feature art originating from China, Japan, and India. It’s great for those looking to get out of the heat and into a fun, interesting environment.
