Charlottesville Summer Bucket List: Carter Mountain

Welcome to our final week, Week 5! In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we highlight five of our favorite summer activities in the Charlottesville area. Let us know which adventure was your favorite after you tackle the bucket list! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The last item on Nest Realty’s Charlottesville summer bucket list is to pick fruit and listen to music at Carter Mountain. Carter Mountain Orchard is practically in our backyard—less than 15 minutes from the Downtown Mall—and offers a variety of family-friendly activities. From fruit picking to wine tasting and live music, there’s something for everyone!

The orchard hosts apple and peach picking, as well as a market of fresh fruit, if you wish to purchase or taste without doing the actual picking. Their grill offers sandwiches and appetizers such as pulled pork barbecue, pimento cheese sandwich, and Mexican street corn. You can also purchase a glass or bottle of wine at the Prince Michel Wine Shop, which offers dozens of local wines and even frozen “slushy” wines for particularly hot days! Check out the Bold Rock Cellar below the market for fresh, bubbly cider and apparel from the local cidery. Live folk and bluegrass music is a highlight as well; Carter Mountain has several patios and balconies that host local bands and musicians.

Carter Mountain is open everyday from 9am to 6pm. One of its most popular weekly summer and early fall events is the “Sunset Series” on Thursday evenings, where you can listen to live music, order food at the grill, eat some of their locally-sourced peach ice cream, and watch the sun slowly sink below the vast, surrounding mountains. It’s a fun time for all ages!
