Charlottesville Summer Bucket List: Old Rag Mountain

In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities around town. After you tackle our bucket list, let us know which adventure was your favorite! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The first item on our list of must-do summer activities in Charlottesville is to hike Old Rag. Located only a little over an hour drive from Charlottesville in Syria, Virginia, Old Rag summit is a popular hiking destination nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains of Shenandoah National Park. One of the best hikes in the entire National Park is the challenging Old Rag Mountain Loop trail, a 9-mile loop trail that offers a little bit of everything.

After a steep ascent up the mountain and multiple rock scrambles, you’ll reach the summit. It’s one of the best views of the indigo, beautiful Shenandoah Valley, so you’ll want to be sure you set aside some extra time to enjoy the sight. During the descent down the mountain, you’ll encounter some babbling brooks and small scenic waterfalls. Just be sure to pack a lunch and lots of water, and don’t forget your camera!
