In our HOW TO series, we take out the guess work out of home decor! First up…choosing the perfect rug for your room.
The first rule when it comes to finding the right rug for your room is that there are no hard and fast rug rules! Each room is different with varying shapes and uses. So we’ve created these pro tips to help simplify the selection process.
1. DETERMINE THE ZONES
How many ways will the room be used? A single room can be used for multiple purposes. If your living room operates as both a gathering place, home office, and playroom—you can use different rugs to anchor and define different spaces in the room.
2. MEASURE
Measure the overall length and width of the room. If there are two or more zones, record the dimensions of each area. If the room is oddly shaped or has angled walls, measure the largest rectangular area inside the room.
3. 80% RULE
Search for rugs that are 20 percent smaller than the measurements you found. For example, if the room is 16′ x 20′, look for rugs that are in the 12′ x 16′ range. For most spaces your goal will be to cover enough of the room so that your rug will run underneath at least the front legs of the furniture. For dining rooms, you will want all legs of the furniture but allow some space between the rug and walls to avoid a carpeted look.
4. SOURCE YOUR RUG
Browse the selection at your favorite local design store. If you can’t find the right size or style, turn to some of our favorite online sources: Wayfair, Rugs Direct and Overstock. Online sources typically offer the most variety of size, pattern and color. Take advantage of the many brand and product reviews to find the best option for your home. Here are some of our favorite current trends:

BONUS TIPS:
+ Is there a way to incorporate a feature rug if I have wall to wall carpet?
Consider “layering” a bolder statement rug on top of your neutral carpet. Keep in mind, when placing a rug on top of carpet you will be unable to use a mat underneath to hold your rug in place, so make sure it fits under the front legs of all of your furniture to hold down the edges.
+ What rug should I use in my living room?
For high traffic rooms and areas, consider outdoor rugs. The durable material can be a great option, even for indoors. Outdoor rug manufacturers continue to expand the pattern and style options.
