Meet the Agent: Karen Newgard Black

We’re proud of the team of agents we’ve assembled here at Nest Realty. We think they’re pretty awesome, and we think you will, too. During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents and brokers to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry.

In this installment, we chat with Karen Newgard Black, a Nest Realtor in Asheville, NC.

Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! What brought you to the area? How long have you lived here
Karen Newgard Black: I’ve been in WNC since 1993 and Asheville since 2004. I came to the area to attend Penland School of Craft as a student in their CORE Program

NR: How did you get into real estate? How long have you been practicing?(If you are new to real estate, skip ahead to the next question.)
KNG: I was a “property detective” for my own property and became interested in the industry. There were many things that were not explained to me when I purchased, so I wanted to be able to help others in the process of buying and selling. I have been a realtor since 2017.

NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
KNG: Before becoming a broker I was a studio potter. Problem solving and process! I believe when making art you are always solving problems. Whether it is a design problem or a technical one. You can not rush through the process either or skip steps. You must be thorough – it’s all in the details!

NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
KNG: Their commitment to being present the area through volunteering and local events. I’m also impressed with Nest’s marketing. It’s smart, creative and value driven.

NR: What’s your favorite part of being an agent?
KNG: Bringing clients necessary information to help them make a good decision and then sharing in their success!

NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
KNG: I have always loved design and color. I also enjoy learning how things work and sharing knowledge.

NR: What are five adjectives to describe you?
KNG: Tenacious, Knowledgable, Caring, Dedicated, Crafty,

NR: Who would be your dream client? (This can be funny—a famous person, or celebrity, or a general type of person.)
KNG: A chef, I love a fabulous kitchen.

NR: If you had one piece of advice for a first-time home buyer, what would it be?
KNG: Make a wish list of what you need and want that has some flexibility. Create a realistic budget and get pre-approved with a lender!

NR: What’s your favorite season? Why?
KNG: The next one! I love all seasons!
