New River Valley Bucket List: Bike Poverty Creek

Welcome to Week 2! In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities in the New River Valley area. After you tackle our bucket list, let us know which adventure was your favorite! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The second item on our list of must-do summer activities is to bike the Poverty Creek Trail System located in the heart of New River Valley.

The Poverty Creek Trail system encompasses over 17 miles of trails enveloping the Brush and Gap mountains. So whether you decide to bike, ride horses, run, or hike, you’re in for quite a view!

Poverty Creek Trail is the easiest of the trails in the network. It has several series of small slopes that are perfect for beginning mountain bike riders. In addition, there are several offshoots from the main Poverty Creek Trail that offer more challenging biking terrains. This way, there are options for all skill levels.

Poverty Creek Trail is also an out-and-back trail, so you can turn around whenever you want! The main route is 3.7 miles one way (7.4 round trip) if you decide not to access the trails that branch off. In addition, the trail system is about a 20-minute drive from Blacksburg, so it’s a convenient location for a day of biking and exploring!
