New River Valley Bucket List: Canoe the New River

Welcome to Week 3! In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities in the New River Valley area. After you tackle our bucket list, let us know which adventure was your favorite! Next, send us a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The third must-do for this summer is to canoe on the New River. Believe it or not, the New River is the oldest river on the North American continent, second only to the Nile River as the oldest river in the world! The river flows northward, meandering through spectacular Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains, gorges, and cliffs―and it’s right in your backyard! Grab your boat of choice―be it a canoe or a kayak―and travel down the river on a lazy summer day. Plus, the scenic views down the river can include ancient Indian settlements and tobacco farms!

There are several different outfitters that provide customers the option of renting boating gear for the New River. Explore the websites of New River Outdoor Co.Tangent Outfitters, or even call the local Chamber of Commerce to refer you to an experienced guide that will plan your boating route for you!

Plan on floating about one hour per mile under normal conditions, consider packing a bagged lunch in a secure bag, and don’t forget to bring water and sunscreen! Happy boating!
