Northern Virginia Bucket List: Tube down Rappahannock River

Welcome to our final week, Week 5! In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities in the Northern Virginia area. Let us know which adventure was your favorite after you tackle your bucket list! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The fifth must-do for this summer in Northern Virginia is to tube down the Rappahannock River. The Rappahannock River is the country’s longest free-flowing river in the eastern United States and it offers some of the most scenic and best-protected river corridors in the Chesapeake Bay watershed! So what better way to explore this river and its scenery than float aimlessly down the water on a tube?

There are many spots along on the Rappahannock River for tubing and several different tubing companies you can use. The Virginia Outdoor Center, located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, offers two trips of different lengths: a one-mile trip and a two-mile trip.

The one-mile trip leaves from the Virginia Outdoor Center’s building and lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour depending on water levels. The cost is $20/person and $18/person for groups of 8+—which is a steal—because you can ride down the river as many times as you want! Just as long as you’re back by 4pm.

The two-mile tubing trip leaves from the I-95 bridge and takes approximately an hour and a half to two hours depending on water levels. The ride starts with a set of rapids before transitioning into peaceful waters that flow into the same one-mile stretch that the one-mile trip is located on. The cost is slightly more expensive than the one-mile trip at $25/person and $20/person for groups of 8+.

Both trips end at Old Mill Park, where one of the Virginia Outdoor Center’s buses pick up riders every hour on the half-hour between 12:30pm and 5:30pm.

Before heading over to the Rappahannock, please keep in mind that the minimum age is 6, lifejackets must be worn at all times, alcohol is not permitted, and riders must wear good shoes (not flip flops). Happy tubing!
