Northern Virginia Summer Bucket List: National Museum of Marine Corps

Welcome to Week 3! In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities in the Northern Virginia area. Let us know which adventure was your favorite after you tackle the bucket list! Next, send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The third must-do for this summer in Northern Virginia is to explore the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Immerse yourself in the lives of the nation’s heroes―follow their activity at boot camp to Pacific Ocean beaches during World War Two to the Korean War and the battlegrounds in Vietnam. Located astride I-95 near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, the Museum is easily accessible via the Washington, D.C metro.

The museum is open everyday from 9 am to 5 pm and, conveniently, parking and admission is free! It even offers free docent-led tours that do not require reservations. Most noteworthy, the museum showcases several galleries, including exhibits on more than 200 years of Marine Corps history organized by era, and separate galleries for each war. One favorite is “Legacy Walk”, which recounts Marine action from colonial times to the current war on terror.

It’s recommended that you set aside 3-4 hours to view all of the galleries and additional time to walk through Semper Fidelis Memorial Park located next to the museum.

In addition, the second Saturday of each month is “Family Day,” where children of all ages are invited to participate in educational activities and events. The next Family Day is from 12pm to 3pm on August 12 and will be focused around “Girls Making History”. Or, if you’d rather explore the museum as a family on your own, there are interactive “gallery hunts” that use pictures and questions to encourage learning about the exhibits.

Come out for a day of free education all about the service, honor, and sacrifice by the Marines!
