Preparing for Vacation: Deliveries

A little planning can protect your house from burglary while you are on vacation.
Don’t let mail and packages pile up at your house while you are on vacation.
Mail
You could ask a friend or neighbor to collect your mail daily, but if you’re going away for a while it makes sense to take advantage of the US Post Office’s Hold Mail service. They will store your mail safely for 3 to 30 consecutive days and deliver a bundle upon your return. You can schedule the service up to 30 days in advance or by 2AM CST (Mon-Sat) on the start date at
Newspapers
If you have home delivery, be sure to place a hold. The Atlanta Journal-Consitution allows you to donate your papers, get them when you return, or receive a vacation credit.
Deliveries
This may sound obvious, but it’s not a good idea to have packages sit unattended on your front porch. Thwart front porch thefts by enrolling in a neighborhood safe address package delivery program. For example, in Virginia Highland you can have deliveries sent to Intown Hardware, Highland Wine and Crystal, CityStorage or Urban Body. Most of the businesses will call you when you have a package to be picked up. Visit any of these community-minded merchants to sign up for the program before shipping your first package.
