LIVE JIVE

We love the Lyric Theater in downtown Blacksburg, VA, for the screening of independent and foreign films, but we also dig it as a live music venue! The restored movie house was built in the 1930s, and now functions as a non-profit that serves the Blacksburg community. Check the schedule for local and national acts. thelyric.com

EASY DOES IT

Inspired by Southern comfort staples, the Over Easy Cafe in Asheville, NC, serves up locally sourced, mountain-grown breakfast daily. Try the lavender french toast or gluten-free ginger spice hot cakes with a purple passion smoothie or mason jar mimosa. overeasyasheville.com

FINE ART

Before you even set foot in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, you’ll be struck by the architectural beauty. Bold lines, green glass, and floating patios are a work of art in themselves. Upon entering the museum, located in Richmond, VA, you’ll be treated to a permanent collection of more than 35,000 works from around the world, along with rotating exhibitions. This winter, be sure to visit the Steinlen: Cats exhibition. vmfa.museum

DING DING

The only thing better than visiting beautiful Virginia vineyards is having a trolley shuttle you there! The Fredericksburg Trolley Winery Tour is a five and a half hour guided tour that brings you to four wineries in Spotsylvania County, VA, to sip, relax, and take in the gorgeous scenery, while learning a bit of history. fredericksburgtrolley.com (photo courtesy of Heidi Bass)

CORNER STORE

Harkening back to yesteryear when small markets and bodegas were the standard, Market Street Market in downtown Charlottesville, VA, is full of old-school charm. Exposed brick and hardwood floors set the backdrop for this petite grocery store that offers local produce, freshly baked breads, beer, wine, and cheeses. The deli counter offers the best sandwich deals in town. marketstreetmarket.net

CHEERS

In the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley, you’ll find Barren Ridge Vineyards. The small family-owned winery was once an apple orchard, and was converted to a grape vineyard and winery in 2004. The eight acres of various grape varieties now include Petit Verdot, Merlot, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, Viognier, Chambourcin, and Touriga. barrenridgevineyardsva.com
