Buying a home is no easy task.
Whether it is your first home, or your sixth home, having someone there to guide you through all of the steps is really important. And hiring the right agent truly matters.
For example, I have worked with multiple people who had bought and sold homes previously, but had never owned anything with a septic, and so they had no idea what is required to inspect and maintain a septic or well. By having a good agent, they can help educate you on what you need to know and how you can take care of your investment for years down the road.
Here are a few things that you should look for in an agent:
1. Communication
Real estate, especially here recently, moves fast. Having an agent who is going to communicate with you to answer your questions, schedule showings as soon as available, and write offers quickly will be vitale to you getting into your new home.
2. Local Expert
All agents are licensed in the entire state to sell real estate. However, that doesn’t mean that they should sell all over the state. Each area has a specific MLS. For example, the same MLS in Shenandoah County, is not the same in Virginia Beach. Which means that if I tried to sell real estate in Virginia Beach, I would pretty much only have access to what you as a consumer have. I know nothing about that market, so it wouldn’t be right or fair to you as a consumer, so make sure you are working with someone familiar with the area and the market.
3. Integrity
My previous employer’s favorite word was”integrity.” He always appreciated someone when he knew they were doing the right thing, even if no one was watching. Having someone who you can trust is willing to protect your best interest is important.
Real estate may be a sales job, however, I am in it as a service provider. My goal is never to force you to buy a house or land, but I want you to fall in love and be happy and comfortable with your purchase. Buying a home should be very exciting for you and your family.
