Wilmington Summer Bucket List: Battleship USS North Carolina

In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities around town. After you tackle our bucket list, let us know which adventure was your favorite! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The first item on our list of must-do summer activities in Wilmington is to explore the battleship USS North Carolina, the first of ten fast battleships to join the American Fleet during World War II, participating in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area.

Located across the river from downtown Wilmington, the USS North Carolina is moored at the docks for visitors to step back in history and explore the battleship. The ship contains mementos, oral histories, and photographs from the shipmates during the combat they faced in the Pacific Theater.

Besides the regular programming on board, there are many reenactments and events to attend. Be sure to check out their website for a list of this summer’s events and programs, which include everything from a back porch tour to a celebration of the legacy of the ship.

If you’re a history buff or enjoy interactive exhibits, climb aboard! Check out the visitor page to learn more about rates—the battleship is a self-guided tour that includes a movie and many exhibits. Most people take about two hours on the boat, but visitors can stay as long as they want. The battleship memorial is open every day of the year.
