During our “Meet the Agent” series, we sit down with our agents to learn more about them, what makes them tick, and why they’re passionate about the real estate industry. In this installment, we chat with Kelli Teter, an agent at Nest Realty Charlottesville.
Nest Realty: Tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from? What brought you to Charlottesville?
Kelli Teter: I moved to Charlottesville after finishing my undergraduate degree from West Virginia University. Not having any particular ties to a person or location after graduating, the adventurous side of me took over. I began to search for cities based on my “Kelli criteria.” Charlottesville became an obvious choice as it had the small-town charm I was looking for while still having a great music scene, the college sports I love, being in close proximity to mountains and hiking, and a generous restaurant per capita ratio. I moved to Charlottesville by myself, without knowing a soul in the city. Some call it brave, some call it crazy. Now a decade later, it’s one of my prouder and better decisions.
NR: How did you get into real estate?
KT: My fascination of real estate began when I moved to Charlottesville. As I searched for my own home, I discovered an interest in property values, market trends, and neighborhood development that extended well beyond looking for my rental. After years of my own “market research,” I bought my first property in Charlottesville at the ripe old age of 26. After that, you could say I caught the real estate bug. I love the excitement of the search, the thrill of the negotiation, and the satisfaction of seeing clients settled into their new home.
NR: What was your previous career? How has that prepared you for real estate?
KT: I worked in the healthcare industry for 10 years before my transition into real estate. Healthcare introduced me to service-based professions and the importance of strong client-provider relationships. It was in healthcare that I developed my meticulous attention to detail, passion for excellence, love of client education, and extraordinary customer service. Those attributes have been instrumental in serving my clients as their realtor.
NR: What led you to Nest Realty, as opposed to another brokerage?
KT: I was drawn to Nests’ high standard of integrity and excellence in everything they do and produce. Nest stood out for their client-centered focus not only in customer service, but also in how they seek to continually add value, and bring joy to their clients.
NR: What is your favorite part of being an agent?
KT: I have two favorite things, is that allowed?
NR: Of course!
KT: Okay then, first the joy and satisfaction experienced when we’ve successfully closed on my clients dream home. There’s nothing like it. My second favorite is being able to get to know my clients through the process. Hearing their stories, their values, where they go on vacation, what their kids are up to, etc., is what makes this job personal and fun. As a bonus, I think knowing my clients well can help guide us to finding that dream home.
NR: Do you have a specific area of expertise to offer clients?
KT: I enjoy staging properties. Seeing beyond what is immediately apparent and being able to rearrange a property to show its best advantage excites me.
NR: What is your favorite season in C’ville?
KT: Fall! Chilly morning runs, chai lattes (always good, but extra cozy in the fall season), and evenings by the fire are my favorite.
