New River Valley Summer Bucket List: Pick Blueberries at Windrush Berry Farm

In Nest Realty’s Summer Bucket List Series, we’ll highlight five of our favorite summer activities around town. After you tackle our bucket list, let us know which adventure was your favorite! Send a photo or leave a comment about your day in the sun. We hope these inspire you to love where you live even more than you already do!

The first item on our list of must-do summer activities in New River Valley is to pick blueberries at Windrush Farm, a berry farm belonging to our very own Nester Steve Bodtke, guided by horticulturalist Charlie O’Dell, featured in the Spring/Summer 2017 issue of NEST Magazine.

Located in Newport, Virginia, just outside Blacksburg, Virginia (and within an hour from Pearisburg and Roanoke), Windrush Farm offers visitors the opportunity to pick their own black raspberries and blueberries during the summer and fall months. The berries are all natural, so you don’t have to worry about artificial fertilizers and pesticides; only organic pesticides are used once the plants go into bloom and throughout their growing season. Windrush even supplies buckets for picking and bags for taking home, so you’ll only need to bring a hat to protect you from the sun and some money to purchase your berries!

If you’re unable to make it to the farm, Windrush Farm brings pre-picked blueberries to most of the Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon Blacksburg Farmers Markets during picking season.

Picking hours are dependent on weather conditions and will be decided on a week-to-week basis. Make sure to check the hours posted on the website and Facebook page. Happy berry picking!
